For text with clear limits

Whether it is an application, social-media post, assignment, product description or manuscript, the permitted length often matters alongside the content. The counter updates while you type and handles words using language-aware segmentation.

Numbers, hyphens and emojis

Numbers are recognised like words when they form a distinct part of the text. Hyphenated words follow the browser's language-aware segmentation. An emoji counts as a visible character, but not as a word.

Characters, spaces and line breaks

‘Characters’ includes letters, numbers, punctuation, emojis and spaces. The second figure excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Blank lines separate paragraphs; every line break increases the line count.

Reading and speaking time

The time figures are practical estimates. Difficult specialist text is read more slowly, and presentations with pauses and emphasis usually take longer than the word count alone suggests.

Is the text retained when I close the page?

No. Andersen Web Tools does not store the text. Download it as TXT or copy it into your own document first.

Are hyphenated words counted as one word or two?

The browser uses language-aware word segmentation. This handles common hyphenated forms more appropriately than simply splitting at spaces.

Can I use confidential text?

Technically, the text remains on your device. As with any browser work, make sure no one can read your screen or clipboard.
